Khaled barges into last eight

imageHost country's Khaled Almosawi made further progress in the Gulf Youth Cup, being held at the Bahrain Tennis Federation Centre in Isa Town, after a 6-2 6-4 win over Saudi Arabia's Abdulmalek Abursais yesterday.

The 15 year old rising Bahraini, who is a grade nine student at Alhekma International School, proved too strong for his Saudi opponent and the tournaments eight seed to reach the quarter final scheduked for today. However, Bahrain's other players were unable to follow suit and crashed out of the tournament.

Bahraini Ayman Abdulnabi lost his second round match to fourth seed Mansour Buhamad of Kuwait 2-6 6-4 2-6, Yusuf Qaed went down to fifth seed Rashed Alfalasi of the UAE 3-6 3-6 and Abdulrahman Janahi bowed to second seed Faisal Albastaki, also of the UAE, 1-6 3-6.

In the same category, top seed Abdulhameed Juma of Kuwait eased past the Saudi rival Alwaleed Alsayah 6-3 6-1 to setup his quarter final clash with compatriot Abdulrahman Alawadhi, the tournament's seventh seed who outplayed UAE's Abdulla Alali 6-1 6-1. In other matches, sixth seed Kuwaiti Mohamed Alshati and his third seed compatriot Abdulla Buhamad reached the last eight after respective wins over Oman's Abdulla Albalushi 6-0 6-1 and UAE's Mohamed Ahli 6-3 6-3.

Meanwhile, eight matches in the under 14 boys singles second round where also played yesterday when Bahrain's all youngesters were eliminated. Top seed Nasser Alobaidli of Kuwait defeated Qatar's Abdulla Almahmood 6-2 6-0 and will now play in the quarter final, also scheduled for today, against Abdulla Ahli of the UAE who beat Bahraini Mohamed Abdulaal 6-3 6-2.

Saudi Arabia's Bader Alomran, who is seeded fourth, posted an easy 6-0 6-1 win over Bahrain's Yusuf Alobaidli to setup his quarter final clash with fifth seed Mubarak Zayed of Qatar who beat Bahraini Abdulaziz Janahi 6-0 6-0.

Saudi Arabia's Abdullatif Alrajeh was also victorious against Fahad Janahi if the UAE 6-1 6-3 and is now set to take on third seed Majed Bushaqer of the UAE who edged past Bahraini Omar Qaed 6-2 6-0. Qatar's Abdulrahman Alhareb stunned seventh seed Hashem Bastaki of Kuwait 6-2 6-1 while tournament's second seed Abdulhameed Alshati lived up to expectations by defeating Bahrain;s Yusuf Abdulla 6-3 6-1.
